Kids can do amazing things, recent projects, and a mini-documentary
I had a great week last week. I worked on a project that I just can't get out of my head. Like many of my favorite projects, it's not the resulting sculpture that I love as much as the process. 600 middle school kids in Blue Mountain Middle School in Cortlandt Manor, NY were responsible for designing and building a 40-foot long, 20-foot tall ship. They certainly had guidance and help, but this really was their project, and when you look at the photos, you'll see how proud they are of their work.

This project was made possible by an energetic PTA. Specifically, two moms, Uta Wussing and Mary Riguiero, did an enormous amount of work to make the project happen. I'm grateful to them for introducing me to the school. I also want to thank the two art teachers, Logan Stoddard and Paul Gioacchini, for being incredible to work with. Lastly, I need to acknowledge the hard work and support of Laurie Straus. When Uta called me a few months ago to do this project, I knew I needed to find a local artist to assist me. Laurie has worked with me on Balloon Manor, so I knew she was familiar with how my large projects go. I had a real blast with her and her son, Jeremy, as we worked with the younger kids.
